Why Optometry Confederation of India (formerly known as Optometry Council of India)
Mindful of the growing need to ensure competence, uphold professional standards, and
regulate the quality of optometric education and practice in India, the Indian Optometry
Federation (IOF) and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO)
collaboratively established the Optometry Council of India (OCI) in September 2012.
As a professional body, OCI plays a pivotal role in safeguarding public interest, fostering professional
excellence, and advancing eye and vision care services across the country.
Advocating for the recognition and integration of Optometry in India’s healthcare system and
representing the interests of optometrists at the national and international level.
Establishing ethical guidelines, best practice standards, and educational benchmarks.
Maintaining a register of practicing professionals to ensure accountability and legitimacy.
Promoting ongoing learning through training, workshops, and continued education programs.
Offering volunteer opportunities and project-based roles where professionals can contribute
their skills meaningfully and frame community work as part of the ethics and values of being an
optometrist.
